Novo Collegian Reunion
May 16-May 19, 2024
The 2024 Reunion kicked off on the afternoon of Thursday, May 16th, with an “official” check in at the Bahi Hut patio, which was less “official” and more typically a novo collegian collection of wanderers finally returning to the source! ;)
The real event for the evening, though, was the [NEW] Commencement! It was held at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium and over 700 people showed up to celebrate with the students. Nearly the whole graduating class was in attendance as well, continuing the sacred traditions of New College by wearing costumes, evening gowns, club outfits, and fairy wings!
The 2024 Reunion began in earnest after that, with a non-stop series of meetups and events throughout the weekend!
Every morning, coffee and bagels were set out on the Bahi Hut patio, which became a hub for alumni wanting to reconnect and talk about The Situation. Throughout the days and in between events, people would drop by the Bahi Hut to socialize, hang out, debate, and chill. Just like old times!
The mini-classes held at Fogartyville Community Center on Friday and Saturday afternoon were a wonderful mix of scholarship and commentary. If you missed out, you missed a lot! Here is a sample of the offerings:
Amy Reid - Translation: Hope & Resistance
Mac Miller - Songs for the Conquistadores, a Sing Sing Sing-along
Video premier: Mac Miller interview (introduced by Bill Rosenberg)
Isabel, Auguste, Tea - Current students presented research on sexual assault in detention centers (did you pick up a copy of their zine????)
Steve Miles - New Music New College and Dialogical Learning (20 mins)
Zander & Anya - An Introduction to the SEE Alliance
Jeremy C. Young, PEN Program Director, Freedom to Learn - New Frontiers in Educational Censorship
Brian Cody - New College Accreditation: Challenges, Knowns, and Unknowns
Sarah Hernandez - sociology of institutions and the changes to institutional processes at NCF
Sara Engels - Christian Nationalism & Modern Authoritarianism
Jono Miller - what’s (not) happening with the campus master plan revision & NCFF complaints & legal challenges
Saturday afternoon, there was a well-attended student-alum mixer at the Chickee Hut on the bayfront which had a wonderful, laid-back atmosphere. Students were already starting to drift away from the campus, hit by end of term and post-graduation exhaustion, so it was wonderful that so many showed up to hob-nob with their new alumni colleagues!
The official wrap up was an incredible poolside party on Saturday night at the Golden Host Resort! The food was delicious, and the live music by Silas Dorocher & Friends was fantastic! There was noshing, there was dancing, there was laughter and even a few tears.
We hear tell that there was an after party, but you know, what happens at the after party stays at the after party!
The turnout for the 2024 Reunion was amazing, and the NCA plans to hold more events in the future to give alumni a way to celebrate the school as we experienced it, and what we hope it will become once again.
Please join the NCA to help support our mission and be the first to know of reunion events to come!
