Old School Catalyst Launches!

The Novo Collegian Alliance is a proud supporter of this new, independent version of the student-led news publication, Old School Catalyst! You hope you will join us in supporting them as they move forward into — dare we say it? — a brave new world!

Isaac Tellechea, Editor-in-Chief, had this to say in his inaugural Letter from the Editor:

Old School Catalyst has been a project in progress since December 2023. Established through collaboration among New College students, alums, former faculty and pro bono experts, our non-profit organization will offer hands-on educational opportunities for aspiring journalists interested in developing their skills. Our goal is to teach young writers the principles of ethical, effective journalism and provide a digital platform for their expression.

It has been quite the road to get to the point of publishing our news magazine, also called Old School Catalyst. Over the past 15 months, there has been so much for us to learn and adapt to, but through it all, what has remained indelible is the collective will to take this from an idea to something real. Everyone involved in the process of getting Old School Catalyst off the ground has demonstrated a palpable ambition to get us here. From the writers to the editors to the advisory group, it is overwhelmingly evident to me how much heart was put into every corner of this organization.

“With Old School Catalyst, imparting foundational journalistic principles in our student reporters is at the heart of everything we do because we recognize that these student reporters are themselves the catalysts for truth-telling and balanced, complete representation—something that seems harder and harder to come by these days,” founding member and reporter Sophia Brown said. “We envision a model for student journalism that is classic in its dedication to the craft and revolutionary in its commitment to preserving the free press in these trying times.”

So, it is my great pleasure to announce the first issue of Old School Catalyst. Below you will find articles on Florida’s 2025 legislative session and the Sarasota community’s support for progressive politics, the story of a student writer’s study abroad trip to China being hindered by Florida SB 846, my interview with investigative reporter Kathryn Joyce and more.

Old School Catalyst is made possible only through the support of generous individuals and organizations like you. Please consider supporting our mission by making a tax-deductible contribution today.

Please also sign up to receive upcoming issues and like, share or otherwise spread the word about this important endeavor.

Thank you for your time and attention. I hope you enjoy this inaugural issue of Old School Catalyst.
